After the Christmas rush was over we found some time to head down south again to Albany and then Thomas River. David and Sophie both came with us for a few days for the Albany part of the trip. They enjoyed “camping” on the farm and catching up with family down in that part of the world. (See our location here.)
After spending New Year in Albany, we set off towards Thomas River. The plan was to meet up with Glenn and Tricia along the way and to camp somewhere along the south coast between Albany and Esperance. We had hoped to perhaps find a spot at Mason’s Bay, but when we arrived it was totally full. We sent a message to Glenn and Tricia to save them a little bit of travel and instead met them back on the Hopetoun Road. We had noticed a little lay-by off the road not too far away and decided to give it a try. (See here.) The location turned out to be quite nice – a pleasant rest area well off the road that even had clean toilet facilities.
Roadside camp near Ravensthorpe
The next day we set off towards Thomas River via Esperance. We stopped briefly in town to fill up on some fuel, food and water and then we were off to our camp site for the next week or so. On arriving at Thomas River, we found the camp site relatively busy, but we were able to snag a site that we could both fit into. (See here.) As we were expecting Vicki and Rod the next day however we were a little worried that there would not be a space for them. As luck would have it though the site next to us was vacated on the day they were due to arrive so we parked a car in it saving it for them. Unfortunately, Vicki was not up to the trip, however Rod still came down for a couple of days with us.
The beach near our camp
The rest of our time at Thomas River was spent doing what we normally do – sleeping, reading, driving up the beach, fishing and generally relaxing. We were able to check phone messages every couple of days and on one of these occasions we were thrilled to discover that David and Sophie had become engaged. We were both over the moon about this development and couldn’t wait to see them both to congratulate them in person.
We left Thomas River on Sunday, 15th January and after a sad farewell to Glenn and Tricia at Ravensthorpe we headed to a camping spot known as Gorge Rock which is near Corrigin (see here) for our last night before retuning to the “real world”.
As usual, we really enjoyed our time away and we are forever thankful for how comfortable camping in the Quantum is. We are quite spoilt now and can’t see any reason to change to a more traditional caravan in the foreseeable future. We love our camper and the options that it provided to us for camping well off the beaten track!
